We’re the LGSC Officers!

Welcome to our website! We’re Cris and Maria, proud Latin friends keen on sharing our vibrant culture. With LGSC, our aim is to foster a tight-knit community among individuals who appreciate and enjoy embracing our heritage.

My name is Cristian and I’m a PhD student in the psychology department studying language, memory, and learning. My family is from Mexico and Louisiana. Some of my hobbies outside of my studies include playing video and board games, dancing, listening to music and exercising.

My name is Maria and I’m a PhD student in the soil & crop sciences department studying a carbon dioxide removal technique involving soils. I was born in El Salvador and immigrated to Chicago during the civil war. I then moved to Houston, TX where I have spent most of my life. My hobbies outside of research involve digital art, listening to music, and enjoying time with friends.

Hi! My name is Ilex, pronouns they/them/elle. I am a second year MS/PhD student in Horticulture. I am originally from the Central Valley of California, and have mixed heritage from El Salvador and Taiwan. I am passionate to learn and practice plant medicine from both of my parents’ cultures, rooted in a mix of curanderismo and traditional Chinese medicine. This interest led me to conduct scholarly research that focuses on the urban soil ecology of medicinal plants grown in New York City. In my free time I love to dress-up and go see beautiful scenery, cook delicious food, draw and brainstorm tattoo ideas, and learn about my purpose on this planet.
